How to Analyze Your Competitors on TikTok & Instagram (Free Method)
7 min readFebruary 12, 2026
Why Competitor Research is the Fastest Growth Shortcut
Every viral post in your niche is a free case study. Instead of guessing what works, you can analyze what's already proven to perform — then create your own version.
This is not copying. It's understanding the patterns behind viral content and applying them to your original ideas.
Step 1: Find Your Benchmark Accounts
Look for accounts in your niche with:
- →10,000–500,000 followers (small enough that tactics are visible, big enough to have data)
- →Consistent posting (at least 3 posts/week)
- →Posts with wide variance (some with 10x more views than others — that's signal)
Step 2: The Viral Post Analysis
For each account, find their top 5 performing posts (sort by views/likes). For each post, answer:
- Hook: What are the first 1–3 words? What's the format (text on screen, face-to-camera, B-roll)?
- Format: Tutorial? Storytime? List? Reaction? POV?
- Length: Under 15s? 15–30s? 30–60s?
- CTA: Does it ask for saves, comments, shares? Or none?
- Pattern: What do the top 5 posts have in common?
Step 3: Look for the Gap
After analyzing 3–5 competitors, ask:
- →What format do they ALL use? (Avoid — it's saturated)
- →What format do NONE of them use? (Opportunity)
- →What topic performs best across all accounts?
- →What's the average video length of their top performers?
Step 4: Build Your Content Hypothesis
Write a brief before your next post:
"Based on analyzing [competitor], [format] + [hook type] + [topic] outperforms everything else. I'll test this with [my own angle]."
Then track your post against their benchmark.
